Chapter Ten

Joe

It’s not until the end of the week in the office that I have my first real conversation with Gavin since the company event night last week. He drops by my workstation late afternoon while I’m working on a spreadsheet.

“I understand Mikey and you have brought in two new accounts for your territory in the last few days?” he says, nostrils flared, “good work.”

My new boss is trying to take credit? He had nothing to do with either of those wins. Apart from inspecting my sales presentations before I went to the meetings. Even then, he offered little constructive advice.

I resist calling Mikey out for the prick he is and I merely smile back at Gavin. The pair of them are as thick as thieves. Venting won’t do me any good. Neither will challenging the lecherous jerk in front of me over what I overheard him say in the washroom about Rachel and ‘suitable positions.’

But I’ve made up my mind. I’m out of this place as soon as I possibly can after we’re married. The minute I find a better job. And in the meantime, I’ll take his pathetic comments about Rachel as a compliment. I’ll feel sorry for him. Him and his own ‘plain Jane’ wife.

“I look forward to seeing you get back on track with your sales target over the next couple of weeks then Joe,” he says.

I nod and force another smile to disguise my thoughts.

“How’s that wife-to-be of yours doing anyway?” he crosses his arms, “she started that new job yet in sales promotion?”

Cheeky prick. “Just done her training,” I say but his question has made my face burn and reminded me again of the event Rachel attended on Wednesday night. And that she was fucked once more by Phil. And, of what’s planned for tomorrow night.

Mercifully my phone rings.

“It’s the T-Mart buyer,” I say with my hand over the mouthpiece, “I need to take it.”

In the evening I arrive at Rachel’s in the car a little before 6 pm to pick her up and take her to the gig with me. Talbot is tending plants in his garden and I try to work out whether I can get to and from hers and the car without either being seen by him, or him trying to speak to me.

But before I’m even out of the car he looks up and over at me.

“You let me down last night Joe,” he stands and shakes his head, a pair of pruning shears in one hand.

For fuck’s sake. “I couldn’t get over here last night,” I glance at her house, keep walking.

“But you can get the stockings for me now?”

“Shh,” I say, stop and stare back at him.

“I know she wore them Wednesday like you said she would. I saw her get home in them late that night. Walking. I’m guessing she must have been dropped off further down the street by a cab,” he looks right me, watches me.

“Dennis, I can’t do this. It’s not right.”

“Evening Rachel,” he smiles and waves beyond me.
